Protein Powder for Teenagers
If you are looking at protein powder for teenagers, the label tells you most of what you need to know, as long as you know which lines to read.
Protein powder for teenagers: 6 label checks
1. Protein per serve
Look at the nutrition panel, not the front of the tub. Compare grams of protein per serve with what your teenager actually needs; see protein for teens.
2. Added sugar
Check the sugars line and the ingredient list for sugar, glucose, maltodextrin or syrups.
3. Stimulants and extras
Some adult products include caffeine, guarana or other stimulants. Read the full ingredient list and leave those for adults.
4. The warning statement
Products sold in Australia as formulated supplementary sports foods must carry the statement "Not suitable for children under 15 years of age or pregnant women: should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision." If you see it, the product was not designed for younger teens.
5. Testing
Ask the brand whether it tests for contaminants such as heavy metals, and whether it will share the results.
6. Price per serve
Divide the price by the number of serves in the tub.
