Is Protein Powder Safe for Teenagers?

Is protein powder safe for teenagers? For most healthy teens a sensible serve as part of normal meals is fine, but a few checks are worth doing first.

Is protein powder safe for teenagers: what to check

  • Food first. Most teens meet their protein needs from meals. A powder should fill a gap.
  • The label warning. Read the warning statements on the tub. See the label checklist.
  • Stimulants. Leave products with caffeine, guarana or similar for adults.
  • Contaminant testing. Ask the brand whether it tests for heavy metals and will share results.
  • Medical conditions. If your teenager has kidney problems, is allergic to milk, or has another condition, ask your GP or an Accredited Practising Dietitian first.
